چکیده

Background. PermaNet® 3.0 (PN 3.0) is a combination long-lasting insecticidal net (LLIN) designed to have increased efficacy against pyrethroid-resistant malaria vectors. Field testing of this new tool under normal use has been limited. Here we report on a small-scale village trial carried out at two localities where malaria vectors were resistant to pyrethroid insecticides. Methods. Nets were distributed to cover all sleeping spaces and evaluated for insecticidal activity. Households were visited to assess net usage and reported side effects. Entomological data were collected on a monthly basis for 12 months. Results. Bioassays repeated on domestically used PN 3.0 over 12 months showed persistent bioefficacy although bioefficacy of Olyset decreased over this period (< 80% mortality). The overall results demonstrated that PN 3.0 was well accepted by nets users and resulted in 8–11% and 34–37% reductions in blood feeding relative to the Olyset and the untreated control respectively. Anopheles gambiae s.s. mortality was also greater for PN 3.0 (> 65% mortality) compared to the Olyset nets (< 45%). Conclusion. This study provides persuasive evidence on the increased efficacy of PN 3.0 against malaria vectors with kdr only and kdr plus metabolic-based pyrethroid resistance mechanisms under realistic LLIN use scenarios.

Field efficacy and acceptability of PermaNet® 3.0 and OlysetNet® in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES Insecticide resistance in mosquitoes at Kinshasa may jeopardize the efficacy and usage of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). Entomological impact, user acceptance and bioefficacy of a combination LLIN (PermaNet® 3.0) and a standard LLIN (OlysetNet®) were evaluated at two sites in Kinshasa characterized by high densities of either Anopheles gambiae s.s. (Kindele) or ...

Efficacy of PermaNet® 3.0 and PermaNet® 2.0 nets against laboratory-reared and wild Anopheles gambiae sensu lato populations in northern Tanzania

BACKGROUND Mosquitoes have developed resistance against pyrethroids, the only class of insecticides approved for use on long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs). The present study sought to evaluate the efficacy of the pyrethroid synergist PermaNet® 3.0 LLIN versus the pyrethroid-only PermaNet® 2.0 LLIN, in an East African hut design in Lower Moshi, northern Tanzania. In this setting, resistance ...

Efficacy of Olyset® Duo, a permethrin and pyriproxyfen mixture net against wild pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles gambiae s.s. from Côte d’Ivoire: an experimental hut trial

Pyrethroid resistance in malaria vectors has spread across sub-Saharan Africa. Alternative tools and molecules are urgently needed for effective vector control. One of the most promising strategies to prevent or delay the development of resistance is to use at least two molecules having unrelated modes of action in combination in the same bed net. We evaluated in experimental huts in Côte d'Ivo...

Combining Organophosphate Treated Wall Linings and Long-lasting Insecticidal Nets for Improved Control of Pyrethroid Resistant Anopheles gambiae

BACKGROUND New approaches to delivering insecticides need to be developed to improve malaria vector control. Insecticidal durable wall lining (DL) and net wall hangings (NWH) are novel alternatives to indoor residual spraying which can be produced in a long-lasting format. Non-pyrethroid versions could be used in combination with long-lasting insecticidal nets for improved control and managemen...

Effectiveness of permanet in Côte d'Ivoire rural areas and residual activity on a knockdown-resistant strain of Anopheles gambiae.

The effectiveness of long-lasting preimpregnated nets of Permanet type (deltamethrin, 50 mg/m2) erected in households in rural areas of Côte d'Ivoire was tested on two laboratory strains of Anopheles gambiae s.s.: the Kisumu susceptible strain and the Vk per pyrethroids resistant strain with >70% kdr allelic frequency. Treated nets were distributed in households in three villages of Danan6 fore...
